Embrace YOUR Assets

Embrace Your Shape! October Style Tips

Figuring out the styles that flatter you is key to a sexy wardrobe and confidant you. Dressing your body allows you to show off the areas you love about yourself- long toned legs to rock a mini, arms that scream to be THE accessory to your sleeveless upper…embrace your assets!

There are four most talked about body shapes: Apple, Pear, Hourglass and Straight (rectangular). Find a quick reference below as to what may help flatter your body.

Apple: top heavy. This shape benefits from accentuating the legs and butt, drawing attention away from the waist/torso area. Drawing attention to the bust and neck is also a positive for the Apple shape.

Pear: bottom heavy. Using neutral and solid color opposed to patterns can help your bottom look slimmer- although these days we are trending large behinds! Think Kim Kardashian and rock that ass-et… However if that’s not for you, by bringing attention up to your waist and mid section, think belts and V-necks, will help balance out your shape.

Hourglass: narrow waist while hip and bust are equal yet larger than waist. A shape that many try to mimic- show off what you have without giving too much away. Simplicity goes far with this shape. Clean lines, scoop neck tops, waist belts, avoid extra fabric- layering isn’t the best option for this shape.

Straight (Rectangle): waist and hips are the same or similar. Stay clear of baggy clothing with no shape to avoid looking too boyish. Adding texture and feminine layering (think lace) can help bring out a flattering and feminine appeal. This shape can also ‘fake’ an hourglass by bringing your waistline in to exaggerate curves (i.e. a belt or crisscross dress).

Now lets talk FALL FASHION TRENDS and how to dress them for your shape.

LEGGINGS: Yes you read that right- leggings are making a bigger breakout this season, even by the likes of Rachel Zoe and Louis Vuitton. The key to wearing a pair that is right for you is fit and texture. Ensure the size is right. Too tight or too thin will leave you with a pair that is see through- exposing more than you hoped for. Pair with a tunic top, sweater or dress…something a little longer than a typical top. Leggings, although more recognized- are still NOT PANTS. Wear them tastefully.

Tuxedo Jacket: This is the perfect staple to add a classic feel to almost any outfit. Dress it up for a night out or down with jeans and a T. This is a great piece for any size as it is a piece that works both fitted or oversized. You can leave it open or buttoned- when buttoned, the neckline of the v is another reason it adds to most body shapes.

V-Neck: This neckline looks great on anyone. Reason being- it gives a slimming verticle line and a great focal point.

Over-the-Knee Boot: Shoes are a fun way to add a piece of you and a flare for style to your wardrobe. There are so many ways to wear this trend that can cater to any size and fashion style. Add a heel is you are looking to elongate your leg and/or add height. Pair with leggings and a Chunky-knit and you are on TREND for fall. Just ensure you choose the right Knit for your shape.

Chunky-Knit Sweaters: No matter your shape you can wear this trend…but the proportions for this style and your shape are key! Slim/athletic/straight and petite shapes can get away with the baggier knits. All above, aside from petites can also wear the longer knits- petites the longer knits will make your legs look shorter, so opt for something that finishes at waist or bum. For our curvy shapes (apple, hourglass), best stick with lighter weight materials that don’t add bulk and bagginess- this will just make your shape look bigger than it is. Grab a knit that is a nice weight and holds some shape through the midline to accentuate the smaller area on your body. A V-neck knit would look great!

Stud Bag: Accessorize! The right accessory will have you smiling ear to ear- and will finish your outfit off perfectly. The studded bag is a must have for Fall 2014…the other bonus- one size fits all!

And remember, if you feel uncomfortable you probably look uncomfortable. So ensure to find what works for you. No rule is set in stone- these are simply talked about guidelines!

Balancing Act

~“Life is a Balance of holding on and letting go” ~ Anonymous

2015 is all about BALANCE. This is represented in SO many different ways- and oddly enough- a fairly knew concept to me. I am one that can’t sit still very well: Guilt actually consumes me when I feel I am not doing enough. Hence why BALANCE has entered my mind…and vocabulary.

“An even distribution of weight enabling someone or something to remain upright and steady” is how Google defines Balance.

To some, balance may be an obvious; I am going to go out on a limb here and say that at some point, everyone had to check himself or herself in order to find their balance in life- a type of “Aha” moment for the likes of Oprah.

Prioritizing my life to ensure the important gets done and allowing what is not to move aside, is already allowing me better balance in life.

At this time of year, the word RESOLUTION keeps circulating. I am steering clear of this word as, yes I have a list of things I want to achieve and do better at, but every step that I have taken in my 32 years of being has brought me to this place and time. I am going to integrate these personal goals into my way of life. They are apart of how I want to better myself, who I want to be. I feel like a grown up finally. Yes, that may sound funny, as I am married (for almost 10 years) and have three children, but I finally feel that I can live MY life: I can say yes when I want to and no when I don’t. That if I like ME, than I am being the best ME I can…and that’s all right! My husband seems to think so too. ;-p

Is this a form of balance? I think so.

Balance is a word that even by definition speaks of weight. Weight is something that most people struggle with in some form. Be it wanting to lose some, gain some or maintain. I am no exemption to this. I have struggled with weight on many levels through my years. Recently I came to a realization that, without finding balance within myself, I truly feel I wouldn’t have come to. There is always going to be something about me that I am going to want to change- something that I wished was different. These things however do not define me. Especially when it comes to weight and image. A number on a scale does not define me and I will not to allow this to rule my mood and life. I will take those hours that I could sweat it away solo in a gym and enjoy the moments with my family and friends. I will hit the trails for a run with some girlfriends- because not only does the exercise make me feel better, but also I am able to catch up with friends. I will hit up my local fitness facilities because I have FUN there! I will be healthy and active- forever and always- but the number that it shows on the scale is irrelevant when I know I am doing the best I can. I will never be a size 0, and I have learnt that I also never actually want to be! I have been home to three babies; I enjoy eating and drinking- and although all in moderation is a good motto to follow…the truth is, I ENJOY LIFE!

I have an amazing family. I have wonderful friends. And I can honestly say, that I like the person that I am. 2015 forward is about finding the balance to do and to accomplish all that I want to have in my life. Life isn’t going to end as I learn to say ‘no.’ I am going to love my way through life, maintaining a happy balance along the way.
